The Salt Water Cure

"The cure for anything is salt water. Sweat. Tears. Or the sea."

                            Isak Dinesen, AKA Karen Blitzen

Excerpt from one of Dinesen's books:
"I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills. The farm lay at an altitude of over six thousand feet. In the day-time you felt that you had got high up, near to the sun, but the early mornings and evenings were limpid and restful, and the nights were cold."

There. Couldn't you see it, feel it, hear it, and didn't you want to know more about this farm and what happened there? Couldn't you hear Meryl Streep's voice and see that train in the movie racing over the beautiful land, bringing her to the farm in Africa?

Oh my. The depth. The wisdom. The emotion. And her ability to express all that in a few words to create a powerful life story. We've all been there, where we could only work through it, cry our hearts out, or take a jaunt to the sea and just watch the waves that have been flowing for millions of years.
Study her words and how they can transport us.

If the words sound familiar, it's because the movie director used the author's words to set up the movie. Such a rare move and credit to the writer. Most times, the movie folks make sweeping changes from the book and rarely use the author's own words as a voice over. Actually, there were some changes to the story, making it more compatible to a movie audience.

We would do well if we could incorporate such interest, empathy and curiosity in our main characters and their stories.
Remember the salt water cure. Sweat. Tears. Or the sea.
