Find Yourself in Autumn Country…

11/2/2021

What is Autumn like in Tucson? Cool nights & mornings in the 50’s; warm sunny days in the mid 80’s. Perfect, right? Great for golfing, hiking, and generally enjoying outdoors. But if you want color, as in autumn leaves, you would need to go to the mountains, which we have in Arizona. Even then, most turn yellow, which is lovely but still… not much variety.

Fortunately, we have relatives in lovely, tree-filled Connecticut. This October, we found ourselves there for a perfect fall week of cool nights and sunny days with multiple colors everywhere.
I call it Autumn Country.

Travel notes in Autumn Country:
  • Be prepared to wear a jacket, and shed it by midday.
  • Trees are lush, large, and colorful. Everything from green to yellow to red, to rust to brown. Sometimes several colors on one tree.
  • Previous weather, rain, and frost dictate how the leaves will behave. Each year is gloriously different.Seafood, seafood, seafood! All prepared to perfection.
  • Connecticut has its own take on Lobster Rolls (my fav), Hot Buttered Lobstah Roll. It’s warmed luscious lobster meat on a toasted bun drenched with melted butter. The traditional one from Maine is a cold lobstah salad on a bun. Both excellent.
  • Seafood, in general, on the East Coast is extremely well-prepared due to competition and being located near fresh catches. Lobsters, oysters, calamari, clams, scallops, crab cakes and fish - all excellent at most restaurants.
  • Stairs. A ranch style house with all bedrooms on one floor is rare. And almost all houses have a basement.
  • Harvest, Halloween and Thanksgiving are celebrated with piles of pumpkins and hay bales on doorsteps. Many businesses and neighborhoods celebrate the season with themed outdoor displays and contests.

So, find yourself in colorful Autumn Country for bustling cities, lovely villages and charming coastal towns. And of course, great seafood!
And here are my Fall Specials for your cozy winter reads.
